Alpha rhythm onset detector based on localized EEG sensor
نویسندگان
چکیده
The goal of this study is to detect the onset of alpha rhythm in the electroencephalography (EEG) signal after eye closure. We developed an algorithm that detects the alpha rhythm onset by analyzing the FFT of an EEG signal, obtained by means of a localized sensor in the occipital zone, developed with specific characteristics for alpha rhythm acquisition. The EEG signal of eight subjects was recorded while they were performed a simple task of opening and closing the eyes and annotated the eye closure event with a manual triggering switch. The results show that, in average, the latency of the alpha rhythm onset in this group of subjects is 1.01 s, with a standard deviation of 0.49 s. Keywords— Electroencephalography (EEG), eye closure, alpha rhythm, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), signal processing.

THERE have been surprisingly few studies of the electro-encephalogram (EEG) in blind persons, and the first report appears to be that of Adrian and Matthews (1934) on the absence of alpha rhythm in totally blind subjects. Further reports on the alpha rhythm were made by Loomis, Harvey, and Hobart (1936), Lemere (1942), Callahan and Redlich (1946), Redlich, Callahan, and Mendelson (1946), Drever...
متن کاملDevelopment of infant sustained attention and its relation to EEG oscillations: an EEG and cortical source analysis study.
The current study examined the relation between infant sustained attention and infant EEG oscillations. Fifty-nine infants were tested at 6 (N = 15), 8 (N = 17), 10 (N = 14), and 12 (N = 13) months. Three attention phases, stimulus orienting, sustained attention, and attention termination, were defined based on infants' heart rate changes. Frequency analysis using simultaneously recorded EEG fo...

In the experiments with mental marking of the omitted stimulus one of the subjects (SH) showed paradoxical alpha reactivity. Bursts of the alpha oscillations were recorded in 100 per cent of the trials at all electrode locations when he mentally marked omitted tones. The omitted stimulus paradigm applies to intentional component of behaviour during cognitive task performance. Subjects were aske...
متن کاملThe Visual Evoked Potential is independent of surface alpha rhythm phase
A Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) is an electrical signal picked up by a surface electrode in response to the activation of visual cortex by a visual stimulus. Because the VEP is typically much smaller in magnitude than the ongoing spontaneous EEG signal, the VEP is derived by averaging a large number of responses time-locked to stimulus presentation. Standard theory has it that the VEP is indepe...
متن کاملA microprocessor device for the real-time detection of synchronized alpha and spindle activity in the EEG.
A microprocessor based device is described which permits the real-time detection of synchronized EEG activity within the frequency range of the alpha rhythm or sleep spindles. This device offers a reliable, inexpensive method for EEG analysis according to flexible, user selectable parameters. It can be used either on-line or off-line and provides information as to the occurrence and duration of...
